Located in the hills of Hacienda Heights, this single residence is set to rise on the exact footprint of the family’s original home. After 30 years of living in the existing house, the owners made the considered decision to rebuild with a contemporary design that embraces simplicity, warmth, and natural materials.

The new residence is composed of interlocking volumes that echo the original layout. The entry opens into a tranquil Japanese–style courtyard, framed by floating beams that cast shifting patterns of light and shade. Slatted wood panels, inspired by traditional Japanese screens, filter sunlight into the space. Here, as throughout the entire home, the feeling is a balance of serenity and security for a new phase of family life.
